Super Neat Trick for Playing 3 Draw Whole Step Bend in Tune

$

Hello and welcome to this week’s lesson where I will be showing you a clever way to learn how to play the 3 draw whole step bend in tune on any harmonica.

Most people struggle with hitting the 3 draw whole step bend at all and then when they finally do, it is often too deep or not deep enough. They might then try using a tuner app to see whether they are in tune. This then tells them that they are out of tune but it doesn’t help any more than that.

There is a simple solution to this problem which is using another harmonica as a reference pitch for the bend.

Reference harmonica

If you are trying to play the 3 draw whole step bend on the C harmonica you are actually trying to hit an A note. So if you play an A note on another harmonica that doesn’t require bending, you can hear what it should sound like.

I suggest that you play the 4 blow on an A harmonica to hear what the bend should sound like on the C harp.

Learn what the vibrations feel like

Not only do you learn what the note should sound like but your mouth learns what it feels like to vibrate at that pitch. This makes it much easier to play the bends – as if by magic!

Try this on all keys

You can do this trick any key harmonica as long as you have enough other harmonicas as references. I highly recommend that you download my reference chart for the 3 draw whole step bend on all keys by clicking the button below.

Good luck and thank you!

Hello and welcome to this week’s lesson, where I will be showing you how to play the bass line from Sonny Boy Williamson’s classic tune – Help Me.

The original version is in the key of F minor which would require an Eb harmonica for us to play this bass line. However I figured that most people wouldn’t actually own an Eb harmonica so I’ve done it in the key of D minor on a C harmonica instead.

Build up stamina

Playing a bass line like this is an excellent way to build up stamina because it forces you to keep going throughout a whole song.

I recommend that you download the backing track and practice playing along for the whole duration. You will probably find this quite hard at first both from a strength and concentration point of view. Persevere and you will become a strong harp player!

Using the bass line to improvise

Any bass line is an excellent jumping-off point for improvising. It provides you with great target notes that you know will work over each chord.

Careful with the timing

This is not a massively challenging tune to play but you do need to get the timing just right. It has a slightly odd pattern where the first lick starts on beat 4 then the second lick starts on beat 1. This alternates all the way through until Lick 5.

It might feel quite unnatural to play like this at the beginning so make sure that you spend plenty of time listening to the whole thing first so that you get really comfortable with the timing.

Awesome trick to play the 3 draw half step bend in tune

Advanced Beginner Level LessonHello and welcome to this week’s lesson where I will be showing you a clever way to learn how to play the 3 draw half step bend in tune on any harmonica.

Most people struggle with hitting the 3 draw half step bend in tune because it is such a small and subtle bend. If they practice it with a chromatic tuner they usually see that they are bending too deep but then really struggle to work out how to do it properly.

There is a simple solution to this problem which is using another harmonica as a reference pitch for the bend.

Reference harmonica

If you are trying to play the 3 draw half step bend on the C harmonica you are aiming for a Bb note. So if you play this note on another harmonica that doesn’t require bending, you can hear what it should sound like.

I suggest that you play the 4 blow on a Bb harmonica to hear what the bend should sound like on the C harp.

Top 5 Harmonica Practice Tips

$
0
0

Hello and welcome to this week’s lesson, where I will be giving you my top practice tips so that you can get better quicker!

1. Use a Metronome

There are two reasons to use a metronome.

Firstly, it helps you to learn a good sense of timing so that you know where you are in the music.

To get the most out of a metronome, tap your foot so that you train yourself to internalise that pulse .
Secondly, it is a great way to help you increase your speed. Indeed, once you establish a baseline for a lick you can gradually increase the speed in small increments.

2. Record Yourself

Recording yourself helps you to hear things that you wouldn’t hear while you were playing.

It is very tempting to list everything that is wrong with your playing when you listen to the recording but this is a bad idea. Instead, when you listen back to the recording you can pick one thing that you need to work on.

Try to be constructive in your criticism. For example, saying “that was crap” is not going to make you play any better. Instead, say “that would have been great if my notes were cleaner”. Now you have a clear goal to work towards.

You don’t need a super fancy recording studio to record yourself; a mobile phone is fine!

3. Close Your Eyes

If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t quite get something right, try closing your eyes. You will find that you have access to a lot more processing power to focus on what you are practicing.

You will be amazed by how much better you play without distractions!

4. Keep A Practice Diary

Keeping a Practice Diary allows you to be so much more focused in your practice session. I suggest that you write down the following;

– what you are working on
– what you are working towards
– what isn’t working in your playing

For example

– “I can’t play the Blues Scale using triplets any faster than 60bpm”
– “In six months I want to be able to play it at 100bpm”
– “I’m struggling with releasing my bends quickly enough on the way back down the scale”

Not only does this help you keep a single mind when it comes to achieving your goals but writing something down that isn’t working for you helps your subconscious to work on it while you are not practicing.

5. Take Breaks

Not playing is an essential part of practice!

Micro Breaks

If I am practicing a lick or a scale I will play it 2 or 3 times and then have a micro-break for a split second. This will give your brain time to process what you’ve been doing. It will also stop you from using “momentum” to carry you through your practice.

Big Breaks

An essential part of practice is sleep which is why it is so much better to practice a little bit every day rather than a big session once a week.

I recommend that you aim to practice for 10-15 minutes each day (to start with) rather than playing for 2 hours on Sunday.

I guarantee you will see so much more improvement.

6. Pay Attention

I lied, here is a sixth tip which is the most important one. You must always stay focused and pay attention while you are practicing.

It is very easy to lose focus and just repeat things over and over without getting any better. Instead, you need to be present in your practice so that you can notice things that you are doing wrong and things you are doing right. This will enable you to cultivate the good stuff and fix the bad.

If you have lost your focus but still want to spend time with your harmonica you can switch from “Practice” to “Play”.

Playing harmonica is exactly what it sounds like. You are just making music without trying to improve yourself as a musician. This is also a really important part of your musical journey because it will remind you why you are practicing in the first place.

Thank you

Thank you so much for taking part in this lesson. I hope it was useful for you. If you enjoyed it please feel free to share it with your friends on Facebook and/or Twitter.

Harmonica Speed Licks!

$

Hello and welcome to this week’s lesson, where I will be showing you some tips for getting faster on the harmonica. I’ll also give you 3 fun repetitive speed licks.

You will need a harmonica in the key of C, and we will be playing in 2nd position in the key of G.

Light and accurate

The key to playing fast on any instrument is making sure that you are playing as accurately and lightly as possible.

If you make mistakes when you are playing something slowly they will get compounded as you speed up. This is why you need to practice playing something slowly before you increase the tempo. Make sure that you get it right every time before pushing yourself.

Making your breath force as light as possible means that you will be able to change direction between draws and blows a lot faster. Indeed, if you tried to take a full breath in then a full breath out each time you would not be able to go faster.

How to play Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty on harmonica

Hello and welcome to this week’s lesson, where I will be showing you how to play Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

You will need a harmonica in the key of G, and we will be playing in 3rd position in the key of A minor. However, the original song is actually in between A minor and Bb minor. It is actually slightly out of tune. In live recordings, the band used to play in A minor so that is why I settled for this key.

Great tune for beginners

This is a great tune for beginners to try learning as it is not too difficult to play. In fact if you play it like the original recording you don’t even need to play completely clean single notes.

The easiest way to play your 2 draw whole step bend in tune

$

Advanced Beginner Level LessonHello and welcome to this week’s lesson where I will be showing you a clever way to learn how to play the 2 draw whole step bend in tune on any harmonica.

Most people struggle with hitting the 2 draw whole step bend in tune. In fact there is a tendency for people to bend the note as far as it will go which is actually too deep.

It is really worthwhile working on making this note sound really in tune as it will sound a lot warmer and smoother than the typical 2 draw whole step bend honk.

There is an easy solution for this which is using a reference harmonica to hear what the note should actually sound like.

Reference harmonica

If you are trying to play the 2 draw whole step bend on the C harmonica you are aiming for an F note. So if you play this note on another harmonica that doesn’t require bending, you can hear what it should sound like.

I suggest that you play the 2 draw on a Bb harmonica to hear what the bend should sound like on the C harp.

Learn what the vibrations feel like

Not only do you learn what the note should sound like but your mouth learns what it feels like to vibrate at that pitch. This makes it much easier to play the bends – as if by magic!

Try this on all keys

You can do this trick with any key harmonica as long as you have enough other harmonicas as references. I highly recommend that you download my reference chart for the 2 draw whole step bend on all keys by clicking the button below.
